This workshop is intended for those interested in developing skills for navigating cultural difference in their classrooms, labs, supervisory duties or other teaching/learning environments. The session will provide participants with their own personalized, confidential assessment of their current strengths and challenges around navigating difference and an individualized, Intercultural Development Plan to assist in further developing their intercultural skills.
You will leave this session with an understanding of:
o Definitions of culture, cultural difference and intercultural competency
o How you situate on the Intercultural Development Continuum
o Your own cultural identity and how it may influence your intercultural effectiveness
o How your intercultural competency skills can contribute to navigating and valuing difference in your teaching and learning work
o How implicit bias can influence your view of others on an unconscious level
o How your students’ stages of intercultural development can influence their intercultural effectiveness in group work, research and the classroom
o How to further develop your intercultural competency
What is involved:
At least one week prior to the session, participants will be provided with a link to complete the Intercultural Development Inventory[1]. This on-line survey takes 15-20 minutes and must be submitted at least 2 days before the session to allow the facilitator to compile results[2]. More information about the IDI can be found at https://idiinventory.com/publications/
[1] a 50-question survey designed by Dr. Mitchell Hammer and based on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity by Dr. Milton Bennett
[2] Individual survey results are confidential and not shared beyond the facilitator and the individual participant. Participants may request an individual debrief of their specific results at a date following the group workshop.
