Guided by the University’s Inclusion Framework, OpenEd is launching a Community of Practice to further our campus community’s engagement with Instructional Inclusivity (inclusive teaching, inclusive education practices, and inclusive pedagogies, broadly construed).
This Community of Practice is open to anyone in/with instructional capacities at the University of Guelph who is interested in and/or working toward continuously improving inclusive, diverse, and accessible approaches in their instructional practices, strategies, and/or curriculum design. During this time, we hope to provide practitioners with an useful point of focus on discussing and sharing knowledge and instructional strategies on a variety of aspects related to inclusivity, such as: gender, indigenous ways of knowing, English as an additional language of instruction for learners, mental health and well-being, internationality, intersectionality, etc.
Building on the work of Tommy Mayberry in Fall of 2018 with their “Gender Pronouns and Teaching” talk as part of the PSEER Inclusivity in STEM Seminar Series, we will kick-off the first stage of the Community of Practice on Instructional Inclusivity with a discussion on gender identity in the classroom and “pronouning” the curriculum.[1]
[1] If you missed the Fall 2018 offering, OpenEd is hosting another “Gender Pronouns and Teaching” talk on Thursday, February 28th, 6:00-7:00pm – register here.

Community of Practice A community of practice is a group of University of Guelph members that regularly comes together to learn about and discuss a topic of mutual interest. They are deliberately cross-disciplinary and welcoming of a diversity of experience. With the initial support of a facilitator from Open Learning and Educational Support, communities of practice determine their own formats, goals and meeting schedules. The educational development unit in OpenEd provides initial and on-going support for CoPs that are broadly related to teaching and learning on-campus. The first meeting of this CoP will be organized and facilitated by an educational developer. Given the flexibility and learner-centredness built into the CoP model, the first meeting will be an opportunity for interested members to:
